Tuscany Castelnuovo Berardenga
Staying at Il Colombaio di Montebenichi, you can use Tuscany Castelnuovo Berardenga or Ambra as a base.
The town in Tuscany Castelnuovo Berardenga has the services you might want. You will find cafes or bars where you can have a typical Italian breakfast, coffee, cappuccino, pastries, Panini (sandwiches) and pizza!
You can buy cigarettes, newspapers and other knick knacks at the tabachino or edicola, or shop for groceries at the pastry shop, the butcher or even at one of the two major supermarkets, the Coop and the Punto Sma.
There is a pharmacy, various doctors and dentists, dry cleaners, hair-salons, flower shop, and 2 Roman Catholic churches.
There are also several banks where you can exchange currency during banking hours, typically Monday through Friday from 8:20 until 13:20 and from 14:20 until 15:00 and of course they have ATMs.
Most important right in town there are different alternatives for wine tasting and for purchasing great wine at convenient prices.
Market day is Thursday.
The town of Ambra also provides for all your necessities:
There are is small grocery store and several food shops, butcher, bakery, flower shop, edicola and dry cleaners. You can get cigarettes and calling cards at any of the two bars. You can also find a barber shop, hair salons, pharmacy, doctors, dentist and most important a gas station.
Market day is Tuesday.
The town of Bucine (about 20 minute drive from the villa heading North towards Montevarchi passing Ambra, has the same selection of shops as Ambra but most important has the nearest train station.
Market day is Wednesday.
The town of Montevarchi is a major town 30 minutes from the house heading north towards Florence passing Bucine. Montevarchi has all the services you might need, including hypermarkets, sports shopping centers, apparel, hotels, hospitals and train station, I recommend this one to head to Florence for the day.
Almost everything is available here.
Market day is Tuesday.
The city of Siena is also at about 25 minutes driving from the house but towards the opposite side than Montevarchi. Basicall downhill from the house and then turn left instead of turning right, and stay on that road until Colonna del Grillo when you go on the highway to Siena. I won’t go about explaining Siena in this page as it is a world on its own with lots of material out there for you. Should you have questions please feel free to
By the way, market day in Siena is Wednesday and it is a real treat. Worth your time!
A very important piece of information is what are the SHOP HOURS in Tuscany?
With very few exceptions such as the hyper market in Montevarchi that is open from 8 am until 9 pm Monday through Saturday, shops are generally open from 8 or 9 am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 8 pm Monday through Fridays, Saturday normally stores are open at least in the morning and in bigger cities also in the afternoons.
On Sundays everything is closed except bars and pharmacies and gas stations whose turn is to stay open. Many gas stations have a do-it-yourself pump where you can pay and fill up on gas even on holidays and during closing hours.
A simple guide:
Monday: mornings, many shops are closed, particularly ones not selling food, and including hair dressers (all day
Tuesday: everything is open
Wednesday: everything is open in the morning and most butchers and some grocery stores or food shops are closed in the afternoon.
Thursday: everything is open
Friday: everything is open
Saturday: in the mornings everything is open some shops close in the afternoon.
